The Public Health Institute

For the more than 140,000 refugees in the camps along the Thailand-Myanmar border, opportunities for higher education are extremely limited. Further, there is a critical shortage of trained health workers in the region and limited health services, exacerbating already high rates of maternal and child mortality and illness in the region. The Public Health Institute — an innovative community-based approach focusing on evidence-based public health skills — offers training and field fellowships for 20-24 students per year living in Umpiem Mai refugee camp.
