Nepal
Support communities in need.
Home to about 30 million people, Nepal is a landlocked country in Asia that shares borders with China and India.
The country’s northern border is dominated by the Himalayan mountain range, which descends to the Kathmandu Valley in the country’s center and then down to the Terai plain in the south.
In 2006, a peace accord ended a decade of civil war between the Nepalese royal government and the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist).
Following the end of the civil war and the subsequent abolition of the monarchy in 2008, the country transitioned towards a federal multiparty democracy.
Ethnically diverse, Nepal has made great strides in poverty reduction. The Government of Nepal’s Multidimensional Poverty Index 2021 revealed that more than three million people had been lifted out of poverty since 2014. However, nearly five million people in Nepal are still considered poor when assessed across five indicators: nutrition, child mortality, years of schooling, housing, and assets.
