Home to more than 170 million people, Bangladesh is one of the most densely populated countries in the world. Since gaining independence from Pakistan in 1971, Bangladesh has made great strides to achieve poverty reduction, sustainable economic growth, and continued human development. However, the country still faces many challenges.
Twenty percent of the population (around 34 million people)still lives below the poverty line. Most of Bangladesh sits just 10 meters above sea level, making the country extremely vulnerable to the climate crisis. Storm surges and flooding caused by extreme weather regularly affect large areas of Bangladesh and coastal areas in particular.
In 2017, more than 700,000 Rohingya refugees fled violence in neighboring Myanmar (Burma) and sought shelter in Bangladesh, joining several hundred thousand Rohingya who had previously fled persecution in Myanmar. The United Nations estimates that there are more than 918,000 Rohingya refugees from Myanmar living in Bangladesh.

Community Partners International in Bangladesh
Community Partners International (CPI) has worked in Bangladesh since 2016. We empower Rohingya refugees and vulnerable Bangladesh communities to meet their essential health, humanitarian and development needs. We focus on communities affected by conflict, violence, and displacement, in remote and hard-to-reach contexts, and marginalized through poverty and exclusion. Check out the videos below showcasing aspects of our work.
